While SSH’d into a remote machine, I find that I need to grab a file to use it locally. But, I’m behind a firewall … and so is the server, which means I can’t scp the file to or from my machine. I resort to temporarily dropping the file on an intermediate machine accessible by both.

After doing this for a while I ended up with a lot of junk piled on the intermediate machine because I never clean up files after copying them to my lappie.

Using a recently discovered rsync option,
--remove-source-files
, I created an alias which does the cleanup for me:

alias grabrm='rsync --remove-source-files'

I now after copying the file to the intermediate machine:

remote_machine$ scp foo.txt intermediate:

I run the following command, which copies the file and removes it from the intermediate machine:

local_machine$ grabrm intermediate:foo.txt .

Vim has a pretty awesome fuzzy search plugin, named after the TextMate shortcut, CommandT. Installing it is fairly straight forward, but it crashes pretty bad on Ubuntu. After some reading I found out it is because Ubuntu ships a version of vim with flaky Ruby support.

In order to recompile I installed the following packages:

sudo aptitude install python-dev ruby-dev mercurial ncurses-dev liblua5.1-0-dev lua5.1

I then followed Kresimir Bojcic’s instructions on building from the HG repo and ended up with vim in /usr/local:

hg clone https://vim.googlecode.com/hg/ ~/vim
cd ~/vim
hg update -C v7-3-154
./configure --with-features=huge --disable-largefile \
            --enable-perlinterp --enable-pythoninterp \
            --enable-rubyinterp --enable-gui=gtk2 \

make
sudo make install

With a new vim installed I followed the *command-t-installation* instructions and so far it has been stable.

Update 2012-01-16: After installing 11.10 I found that vim doesn’t have ruby support at all. Following the instructions above worked like a charm.

I was in the market for a new Linux notebook. Something with enough horsepower to use as an every day machine, but small and light enough to carry around everywhere. I found that dollar-for-dollar, pound-for-pound the Macbook Air is best out there [1]. I’m also a long-time Apple user, so the decision wasn’t too difficult. That said, getting Linux to run on this machine smoothly has been a challenge.

First on my list was to get Linux running. I repartitioned the flash, installed rEFIt, then installed Ubuntu 11.04 from a USB drive. Once Ubuntu was installed I learned I was stuck at 1024×768 resolution. There is an issue with the integrated HD graphics on Sandy Bridge Intel chips and/or the physical display. There are a number of forums tracking progress on this issue. So far, a fix has not emerged.

Until driver support comes along, I’ve been using virtualization to run Linux. That’s been a bumpy road as well.

VirtualBox has an issue with i7 processors so it randomly crashes the machine.

I then tried vmWare Fusion. It does not support OpenGL on Linux, so the new Unity desktop doesn’t work. There are ways to avoid the issue, but I’d rather have the OS work out of the box than have to tinker.

Finally I tried Parallels Desktop 6. Out of the box USB appeared to not work. Thanks to a KB article on the Parallels forum everything seems to be working [2]. I’ve been running stable without a crash and with OpenGL support. Both Fusion and Parallels strongly cater to Windows users, but the fact that Parallels also supports Ubuntu well makes me a happy customer.

[1] There are cheaper and more powerful notebooks, but (in my opinion) they are bulkier, more power hungry, and not as feature-rich as the Macbook Air. The closest I found was the Lenovo Thinkpad X1. Configuring it as closely as possible to the Macbook Air, it priced in at $1824 with only 160G flash compared to 256G.

[2] After patching the plist I ran into very similar USB issues and discovered that a VirtualBox VM was “stealing” the USB device. I have not gone back to unpatch the plist and try again, but USB may work out of the box without the plist tweak so long as something else is not claiming the USB device.

My friend Andrew says if you need to do something more than twice manually, time to automate.

On a remote machine I had a bunch of commits I needed to reel into the main repository. The author information was not set on that machine, so I ended up with commits that looked similar to:

commit 6347180d7ada6f198af949375e2e1e1d6692a215 (HEAD, transxml_tools)
Author: user <user@ws-trans02.(none)>
Date: Fri Aug 5 09:48:21 2011 -0700

The author information for a single commit can be fixed by using the command:

git commit --amend -C HEAD --author='My Name <my@name.com>'

Using
git rebase --interactive
it’s possible to do this for multiple commits, but you still have to deal with manually editing git’s “command buffer” and then running
git rebase --continue
after updating each revision. But UNIX is cool and it’s possible to curb CTS with two commands.

First, use GIT_EDITOR and
sed
to automate editing the command buffer:

GIT_EDITOR="sed -i -e 's/^pick/edit/'" git rebase -i <your base ref>

This changes all
pick
commits to
edit
commits, which tells git rebase to stop at all commits giving you the chance to change it. Make sure to change
<your base ref>
with the base commit you want to rebase from, e.g.
origin/master

Then run the
git commit
command above until
git rebase --continue
errors out:

while [ 1 ]; do git commit --amend -C HEAD --author='My Name ' && git rebase --continue || break; done;

At work we have a couple of directories that are organized as two-deep hash buckets, totaling 65536 directories [1]. This creates a ton of directories and traversing this, e.g.
find . -type f
, takes ages. This structure also causes
rsync
to take up a lot of memory.

One way to solve this is to work on a single directory at a time instead of all 256 directories (each containing 256 directories of their own). For example, this will run
rsync
once per directory which dramatically decreases
rsync
‘s work load and works pretty well:

for i in *; do rsync -a $i server:/path/to/dest/$i; done;

With
xargs
the serial process above can be parallelized. The following will continually process 8 directories until all 256 have been copied over:

ls | xargs -n 1 -P 8 -I% rsync -a % server:/path/to/dest/%

I tried with 32, 16, then 8 parallel processes. In my case a
-P
value more than 10 will cause
xargs
to explode trying to create that many
rsync
processes. I haven’t figured out why, but it really doesn’t matter. With 8 running in parallel, the disk and network should be pretty well saturated anyway.

[1] the base directory has 256 directories 00 – ff, which each have 256 00 – ff directories in them. 256^2 = 65536 directories.

I’ve been using a VirtualBox VM running Ubuntu 10.10 quite a bit recently. After getting the base system up and running I installed version 4.0.4 of the guest additions. The guest additions handle VirtualBox shared folders, the clipboard, and screen resolution.

I want to use the VM in full screen; i.e. it looks like I’m running Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro. I’ve been having the hardest time with the screen resolution. One minute it appears to be working, and then all of a sudden the screen resolution gets “off” and it no longer fills the screen. Since having a dynamically resizable screen isn’t a priority at the moment, I figure out how to “hard code” the full resolution I want.

Ubuntu 10.10 no longer has
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
. Instead if Xorg doesn’t have this configuration file, it automatically figures things out while it’s running. That’s great, but at least in VirtualBox it apparently doesn’t get the screen resolution right (I’m guessing the blame falls on VirtualBox for not properly relaying the screen resolution to the guest OS). In any case, the first thing to do is actually get an xorg.conf file. This can be done by:

logging out of the GUI

dropping into a console (e.g.
ctrl+alt+F1
)

logging in as
root

Stopping GDM (service gdm stop)

Run
X -configure

cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Now that the configuration file is in place, find the Display section and add the resolution mode you’re interested in; in my case, my screen res is 1680×1050:

        SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
modes "1680x1050_60.00"
EndSubSection

Finally,
service gdm start

The screen resolution should be full again. Remember the screen resolution will not be dynamic anymore, but that was already jacked.
